Kawaba Village has been known as a producer of rice for many years. The Koshihikari rice called “Yuki Hotaka” is grown with love and care in Kawaba Village each year, using the mineral-rich natural waters that flow down from Mr. Hotaka, one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan, and under the watchful eye of master farmers. A true treasure of the region, in the past it was known as the “fabled rice” that was only eaten by those with connections to the village, rather than being sold on the open market.

It is also famous for the fact that, since 2004, 11 farmers have been granted an audience with the Emperor and Empress at the Imperial Palace to present the new grains for the year. Other achievements include winning successive gold prizes in the International Contest on Rice Taste Evaluation, and the quality of this rice has been repeatedly confirmed by society at large.
